How to Apply

  1. Submit your application

    Apply here.

  2. Provide supporting documentation

Refer to this list to find out if you need to submit additional documentation.

  3. Provide Permission to Talk to Your Payee

The payee is the one who will receive the check if your request for assistance is approved. For example, in a request for rental assistance, the payee is the landlord or property manager. It is part of our strict confidentiality policy that we will not share information about you or talk about you with anyone without your permission. But it is also part of our application procedure to contact the payee and to verify the need for assistance you are requesting. Many payees will not speak to us without such authorization. Some payees will not accept our authorization and will require you to give them verbal permission over the phone. Providing the We Care intake volunteer with permission to talk to your payee, and potentially other agencies that might help you, will be discussed during your interview.

  4. Complete a phone interview

Once your application is received, an intake volunteer will call you for a phone interview. The intake volunteer who conducts your interview will not make the decision about funding your request. Their job is to make sure your application is complete and to fully understand your situation. This will help them present your request to the We Care board in the best possible light.

The We Care board does not see your actual application. This helps to maintain your confidentiality, and allows the board to be more objective in their decision making. Instead, an intake volunteer will write an anonymous summary of your request for the board to review at their weekly Thursday meeting. An intake volunteer is also present at the board meeting to answer any questions the board might have about your situation.

As you can see, the interview is an extremely important part of the application process. Please make sure you have provided a working phone number on your application so that we can reach you, otherwise action on your request will be delayed. The duration of your interview will depend upon the complexity of your situation, but typically they last only about 10 to 20 minutes.

  5. Wait for a Decision

If your application is complete, you will receive a decision within a week. If you application is placed on hold due to limited funding, we recommend that you regularly check-in and provide an update on your situation (either by phone or by email). This lets us know that you are still in need of help, and ensures that we will consider your application in next week’s round.
